Take it from Pete! Math is neat!

Pete the Cat's Got Class

Written and illustrated by James Dean
HarperCollinsPublishers, 2016
21 Pages
Picture Book

Pete the Cat has a math test coming up! His friend, Tom, is having a little trouble figuring out how to add and subtract. Pete sees that Tom is struggling with math, so he decides to help him. Can Pete help his friend become awesome at math before the big test?

I absolutely love James Dean’s artwork for his Pete the Cat book series. The illustrations appear to be handmade with multiple art techniques including sketches, paint, and watercolors.

I chose math as my content area and Kindergarten as my grade level. I would tie the addition and subtraction equations from the book into the math lesson for the day. The book comes with number cards, which have numbers on one side and illustrations of that number of items on the other side. I could use these to help reinforce number recognition as well as provide a visual representation for addition and subtraction.
